Creative Hacks to Entertain Your Toddler While Steaming

When your toddler is congested, whether it is due to a cold, flu or allergies, as a parent you understand that one way to help them feel better is through steam inhalation, but getting a toddler to sit still and breathe in the humid air is much easier said than done. Steam inhalation is a great way to loosen the mucus in the nasal passages as well as relieve the symptoms of inflamed and swollen blood vessels therefore soothing and opening nasal passages.

Creative Hacks to Entertain Your Toddler While Steaming
“Toddlers, whether sick or not, have a mind of their own, and even though you are the adult, it doesn’t always feel like you are in charge,” comments Bronwyn Ragavan, brand manager for Karvol. She continues to say that when your child is congested, you will need to use your imagination to entertain them while trying to steam.

Ragavan suggests the following

“tricks”

to get your little one excited about steaming:

  • Interactive storytelling involving your child as the main character. The steam can even be part of the story, representing the mist in a magical forest.

  • If you are not much of a storyteller, why not read them their favourite book, or choose a funny one that will make them laugh and forget about where they are.

  • Blowing bubbles will not only distract and entertain your child while steaming, but the action of blowing the bubbles will also force them to inhale the steam.

  • Bring in a few waterproof toys that they can hold and play with while they sit through the steaming. Plastic toys are perfect because they can’t be damaged by the water vapour in the room.

  • Play simple games like “peek-a-boo” or “I Spy” with things around the room.

When it comes to steaming your toddler, putting them over a sink of boiling hot water is not recommended and very dangerous. Your toddler won’t stand still with a towel over his head, breathing in the water vapour, but will more likely try and touch the hot water.

“A great way to do this is to steam up the bathroom. Put your shower hot water on full, close the shower door to stop the child from going in, and sit with your child in the bathroom with the door closed. Never leave them alone. Entertain him to keep him in the room for up to fifteen minutes. If he is very congested, it is advised to do this more than twice a day,” suggests Ragavan.
Karvol capsules

To increase the effectiveness of the steam inhalation, use Karvol capsules by adding a few drops on the floor of the shower (not directly under the spray of water) and on your child’s clothes. The Karvol formula includes aromatic oils like eucalyptus, camphor, thymol, lavender and menthol which when released actively work together, helping with the symptoms of congestion, providing easy breathing and a clear head.

Getting a congested toddler to sit still for steam inhalation can be a challenge but it is an effective method for relieving their symptoms and making them more comfortable. By incorporating imaginative storytelling, engaging activities, and safe steaming practices, you can turn this necessary treatment into a smoother and more enjoyable experience for your child.
