It is no secret that the cost of living has increased and therefore we are always looking for ways to make sure that our washing detergent lasts longer and does the job right the first time. However, wastage of a laundry detergent is often based on our belief that we know how to do our laundry, instead of taking a step back and finding ways to make sure that the laundry is done correctly the first time.
“We often believe that we can use our washing detergent anyway we want, and we will get the best results. We choose our own cycles, we choose an amount of detergent we think will work, and hot or cold water – well, let’s just see what happens,” explains Bronwyn Ragavan, brand manager for Personal Touch. “Although we convince ourselves that we have been doing laundry for years and therefore know what we are doing, it doesn’t help when you are washing an item of clothing over and over because you didn’t get the result you were looking for. Rather do it right the first time.”
To get the most out of your washing detergent, Ragavan suggests the following six tips:
Use the correct amount of washing powder for optimal performance. Too little may not clean effectively, while too much can leave residue on clothes and cause buildup in your machine. Make sure to read the instructions on the detergent packaging to make sure that you are washing at the correct temperature and using the correct amount.
For stubborn stains, pre-treating can make a significant difference. This helps to break down the stain more effectively and provides you with the result you are looking for after one wash.
Sorting your laundry not only prevents colour bleeding but also allows you to optimise the wash. Washing whites, colours, and delicates separately ensures that you can choose the appropriate wash cycle and temperature, maximising the effectiveness of your washing powder.
Overloading your washing machine can prevent clothes from moving freely and getting adequately cleaned. Aim to fill the drum to about three-quarters full, allowing enough space for the water and detergent to circulate and effectively clean each item.
Keep your washing powder in a cool, dry place away from moisture and humidity. Exposure to dampness can cause clumping, which affects its effectiveness. Personal Touch Washing Powder Sheets come with their own resealable bag to help maintain its potency, and since it is available in sheet form won’t clump when exposed to moisture.
To ensure your washing machine runs efficiently, clean it regularly. Residue buildup from washing powder can affect performance, so run an empty hot wash with vinegar or a washing machine cleaner monthly to keep it in top condition.
Getting the best out of your washing detergent involves a combination of choosing the right product, using it correctly, and maintaining your washing machine.
“By taking a step back to see where you might be going wrong, or to see what more you can improve when doing the laundry, these few moments will help you to get the most out of your detergent, and cut down on the amount of times you wash the same item over and over again to get the result you were hoping for,” comments Ragavan.
