When deciding on an outdoor vacation, such as hiking and camping, this can often involve relying on natural water sources that might not always be clean enough to drink. Ensuring that your water is safe to drink is crucial for maintaining health and avoiding waterborne illnesses.
“Although a natural stream looks clean enough to drink, you should never drink water you don’t know for certain is clean,” comments Bronwyn Ragavan, brand manager for Milton. “There is the chance that natural water can be full of bacteria, viruses and other contaminants that can be harmful to your health. Rather sterilise the water before drinking to be safe.”
When vacationing outdoors, Ragavan offers the following five tips on how to sterilise your water before drinking it:
Milton* is not only a baby bottle sterilising liquid, but it is also a cost-effective and efficient way to sterilise drinking water. Its effectiveness in killing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens makes it a great option for treating water. Milton tablets are small and easy to carry from place to place.
Boiling water is a time-tested method to kill pathogens. Boil water for at least one minute, or three minutes at higher altitudes. Boiling may be effective against bacteria, viruses, and parasites, but can be impractical while hiking.
UV purifiers use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. These devices are compact and can treat water quickly. They do require battery power to clean the water, which is not always possible depending on where you are vacationing.
Portable water filters come in various designs, including pump filters, gravity filters, and straw-style filters. These systems are effective at removing bacteria, protozoa, and sediment. Although this method can provide immediate access to clean water, the filter can clog and do not remove viruses unless specifically designed to do so.
If you do need to drink “natural” water, rather collect water from flowing streams rather than stagnant pools, which are more likely to harbour pathogens.
Keeping your water sterilised while travelling is crucial for a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience. By using these tools and tips, you can ensure that your water is clean and safe, allowing you to focus on the nature around you and enjoying your adventure. Stay hydrated and travel safe.
One Milton tablet can sterilise 10 litres of water, while 4ml of Milton fluid can sterilise 1 litre of water.
