October is menopause month, with World Menopause Day on the 18th raising awareness and support for better health and wellbeing options for women. Menopause is a natural phase of a woman's life that causes many changes in the body, including hormonal fluctuations. Menopause is commonly linked to hot flashes, mood swings, and weight gain but you might not be aware that women's eye health can also be significantly affected by this transitional phase.

According to a Specsavers Optometrist, menopause can have a significant impact on women's health. During menopause, hormone levels in women, particularly estrogen levels, decrease significantly.


Getting your eyes checked regularly is crucial during menopause. Hormonal changes during this phase can lead to dryness, inflammation, and vision changes, which can impact your quality of life. An eye exam can help detect any underlying eye condition and provide appropriate treatment options. Decreased tear production is one of the most common problems women face during menopause. This can result in dry, scratchy sensations, light sensitivity, inflamed eyelids, and blurred vision. Some women may even experience overly teary eyes while still experiencing the same discomfort. Young also noted that the above changes can sometimes make it uncomfortable or difficult to wear contact lenses comfortably. This can be frustrating and may require you to switch to glasses for a period.


Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to relieve the symptoms.

  • Protect your eyes from wind, dry air, and pollutants by wearing sunglasses outdoors.

  • Use a humidifier in your house to add moisture and soothe dry eyes and skin.

  • Limit the time you wear contact lenses each day to reduce eye discomfort and ensure that your eye drops are compatible with your lenses.

  • Incorporate foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as oily fish or supplements, into the diet to provide antioxidants and reduce inflammation. Flaxseed oil supplements can also provide relief from dry eyes.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water to keep your eyes moisturized and minimise dryness.

Regular eye examinations are essential for maintaining good eye health. Your optometrist can detect any changes or issues related to hormonal imbalances and provide appropriate treatments or recommendations.


It is important not to neglect eye health during menopause. Prioritise making time to visit your local optometrist who will be able to help with advice and care on how to maintain good vision and overall eye health for years to come.
