Local retailer Mr Price has once again come through for young women who do not have all the money in the world. The clothing store has launched the period panty – a reusable, washable panty that does not require the use of tampons and sanitary pads.
According to the retail giant, the panties can be used for up to two years and are quite safe to wear. They retail at R149.99 for one.
The news has been met with mixed reactions from young ladies and women across SA who are skeptical about whether it works or not. However, Kate Combrinck, who has used period panties before, says even people with heavy flow can wear them.
Back in the day, period panties were full panties that women would wear when they had their periods. It would be full panties that could hold the pad nicely. Nowadays, it is panties that you wear during menstruation without a pad or tampon.
Introducing Period Panties
“Introducing our new Period Panties, they are just like normal panties but do so much more. Made with four-layer protection so you can feel your best,” says Mr Price.
The inner layers – made of cotton, elastane with an antibacterial layer and polyester – have been designed to absorb fluid, while the outer layers work to prevent leakage. This, according to the retailer, ensures that the panties absorb and locks the fluid.
The first outer layer, on the other hand, is made of 100% polyester with leakproof properties and an antibacterial layer (silver ion), while the fourth layer consists of 95% cotton, 5% elastane with water-resistant piping on leg openings to prevent leakage.
“Ladies - you can wear one the entire day even with the heavy flow (just make sure you buy a heavy flow version). They do not smell, and they do not create wetness against the skin. I have been wearing (much more expensive) ones for years. Try them, and then try going back to normal sanitary ware. That plastic smell is gross and bad for your hormones/skin/the environment. And washing them out in the shower or sink at home is no big deal. Coldwater and green sunlight bar and in the sun, fresh as new,” she says.
The usage period of the panty is dependent on each person’s flow – the panty can hold up to 50ml. Every pair is designed to be leak-resistant, to control odour, provide ultimate comfort and flexibility.
Keeping Them Clean
For washing and hygiene purposes, the product should be rinsed in cold water before putting it in a normal washing machine or by hand. They are meant to be air-dried in a non-humid environment and should not be placed in direct sunlight
“as it may tamper with the antibacterial layers within it,” said the retailer.
They are not to be ironed.
“Please avoid ironing a period panty due to the sensitivity of the inner layers of the product. Ironing may damage the product’s ability to absorb fluid,” the retailer said.
