The Back to School Cleaning Hack that is Saving Parents Money

Kids grow out of many things, but a school bag always fits. Try this cleaning tip to recycle where you can

Being at school can be a dirty business for school bags and backpacks, regularly tossed aside on dirty floors or dragged along corridors. With the new term just around the corner, one handy hack to get last season's school bag looking as good as new again is saving parents money. Using just two cheap ingredients that most people have at home, it offers an easy and eco-friendly way to get those bags looking beautiful again. Having to shell out for a new uniform, shoes, PE kit and other bits and bobs can cost a small fortune for parents at this time of year. Thanks to platforms like TikTok, parents are sharing top tips to save money on back-to-school purchases.

One TikTok account which regularly shares cleaning hacks, has come up a way on how to make grotty bags glow in time for the new term. The account explains that they spent a lot of money on character backpacks last year and want to reuse them. They then throw the two brightly coloured kids' backpacks into a bathtub half-filled with warm water. They explain how to deep clean the bags, advising parents to

"sprinkle in some baking soda and add some detergent" before "fully submerging the backpack and scrubbing and stains or dirt."

Baking soda is a natural cleaning agent that has been used for centuries. It breaks down grease and dirt and has gentle abrasive qualities that clean without leaving scratches. It can also brighten lighter colours and neutralise unwanted odours.

After letting the backpacks soak for

"about 30 minutes"

rinse and your backpacks are ready, the backpacks should simply be left to dry. In the comments, some followers asked if popping the bags into the washing machine might be an easier option. Not all bags can withstand the heat of the washing cycle, so it's important to check any tags on the bag before throwing them in. Hand washing each backpack also makes it easier to spot and treat stains using a soft-bristled brush or even a small toothbrush while they are submerged in the water.
