What Is A Lash Lift? Everything You Need to Know

So you want longer, lusher lashes? Really, who doesn't?! After all, it's the quickest way to looking like you got a solid eight hours of sleep. But let's be honest: even the best mascaras can only do so much, false eyelashes are kind of a pain, and lash extensions are expensive and require a lot of maintenance. But what if we told you there's another, simpler option that leverages your natural lashes: a lash lift.

What is a lash lift?

A lash lift is essentially a perm for your lashes. The use of a perming solution at the root of your lashes to give them a permanent curl. The result? Lashes that look lifted and refreshed—no falsies or extensions required. It's almost as though you got the best results ever from a heated eyelash curler, with the guarantee of longer wear—it should last about six to ten weeks.

What is the process of getting a lash lift like?

When you sign up for a lash lift, expect to spend about 45 minutes in the salon. During the treatment, you'll first have a quick consultation to discuss your goals (essentially what level of curl you're after) and then you'll lay down while the lash artist gets to work. First, the technician will brush your lashes up onto a silicone curling rod (the exact one will be based on your lash length and curl preference discussed in that initial consultation). Then, they'll apply an eye-safe perming solution to the base of your lashes. “This helps break down the bonds in your lash hairs so they can mold to the curl. Finally, the tech will apply a setting solution to help keep the look in place for weeks to come. Many lash artists will also apply a conditioner to keep lashes looking soft and fluttery. Some lash artists will also recommend getting a lash tint in tandem with your lash lift. Most clients don’t know this, but your lash tips are usually sun-damaged and lighter, so dyeing the lashes from root to tip gives them a mascara look 24/7. It's worth noting that none of it hurts—you just have to keep your eyes closed for the duration of the treatment. But overall, a lash lift is an entirely pain-free process.

How long should a lash lift last?

A lash lift can last anywhere from six to 10 weeks. Exactly how long is dependent both on your hair and your lifestyle/skincare routine. If you have oily skin or use a lot of oils on your face, it can break down the keratin treatment faster.

Are lash lifts safe for your eyelashes?

Lash lifts are generally regarded as safe, experts say. There is some risk of allergic reaction, though. Signs of this include dermatitis, a skin condition that causes redness, swelling, and even blisters. If you have a history of skin sensitivities, you can always ask for a patch test. As is the case with any beauty treatment, we recommend looking for a credible technician, even if it means you have to spend a little bit more. Look for an experienced and licensed lash artist who will not over process your hair.

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is pretty basic, but most technicians will tell you to avoid moisture (like showering, washing your face, swimming, or a steam room), makeup, and other cosmetics for the first 24 to 48 hours. Many will also advise you to sleep on your back to keep lashes beautifully-shaped. Apply castor oil to replenish and nourish your treated lashes.
